Transport tech startups get nearly £2m in government funding

Technology startups and initiatives working on ways to improve transport have received almost £2m in government funding.

The funding comes from the government’s Transport Research and Innovation Grant (TRIG) programme.

Most of the transport tech investment, which went to 67 organisations, has gone outside to regions outside of London, with the capital accounting for 20% of the total.

The transport tech funding is addressing maritime decarbonisation, the future of freight, local transport decarbonisation, improving the rail passenger experience, and transport resilience to severe weather and flooding.

The recipients include:

  • Visually impaired AR navigation app from Makesense Technology.
  • 3D drone mapping firm CC Informatics.
  • Bluewater Engineering’s SKYTUG ship-towing kites.
  • Autonomous logistics drone company IONA Logistics.
  • Transreport’s transport support app.
  • The Port of Tyne’s research into remote robots.
  • Imperial College London’s work on concrete replacement Kiacrete.

Transport and Decarbonisation Minister Jesse Norman said: “From making travelling easier for visually impaired passengers to improving rural connectivity, these winning projects have the potential to transform the future of transport.”

“Transport Research and Innovation Grants support high-potential innovators to develop their ideas into new products and services,” said Nicola Yates OBE, CEO of Connected Places Catapult.

TRIG was launched by the government in 2014 and supplies more than £12m in funding to transport tech projects.
