Instagram boss moves operations out of London in UK snub

Meta is set to relocate the majority of Instagram’s London staff to New York, backtracking from the UK hub plan for the social media giant.

In August last year, Instagram head Adam Mosseri moved the majority of operations to the app’s London office in King’s Cross, suggesting the UK capital would form a major part of the company’s future plans.

At the time, Mosseri’s ambition was to ramp up hiring in the UK to boost the city’s presence in the company.

However, as reported by Bloomberg, Meta has now decided to restructure its international hub strategy and will move the bulk of its London Instagram team to the US.

Meta has gone through several rounds of job cuts since the London move, with around 20,000 staff being laid off over the past eight months.

The snub to the British capital may be to increase the monitoring and control of Meta assets from the US mothership amid a difficult time for the company.

UKTN has reached out to Meta for comment.

Instagram’s London office, which was created in 2013, was the first international move for the app. The UK has for some time been an important base for Meta, containing the highest number of employees outside of the US.
