Stockholm-headquartered Einride’s electric trucks have hit UK roads for the first time following a deal with PepsiCo subsidiary Walkers.
The electric company has two variants of its electric trucks, one that is autonomous and another driven by a human in locations that require human assistance due to local regulations.
Robert Falck, founder and CEO, Einride, said: “The UK has always been at the forefront of transport history. The efficient and innovative movement of goods has consistently been integral to the growth and prosperity of the UK, with the British pioneering both the railway system and canal networks.”
Einride will for now use its human-assisted trucks in the UK. It will start delivering in the Midlands between Walkers’ Leicester and Coventry manufacturing sites.
Trucks from the company will go on to form a “mobility grid” connecting London, Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol across the M1, M5 and M6.
Archana Jagannathan, head of sustainability at PepsiCo UK, said: “At PepsiCo, we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our business, with a goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2040 as part of our PepsiCo Positive agenda.”
UK truck businesses include hydrogen-electric truck maker Tevva and self-driving hydrogen truck company HVS.
Einride’s trucks are also driving around Sweden, the US, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Norway.
Supermarket giant Asda this week entered a trial with Wayve to deliver groceries using self-driving vehicles.
