Global Tech Advocates launches West England group

Tech community network Global Tech Advocates will officially launch its West England group to promote tech in the West Midlands and South West of England.

Tech West England Advocates will be the 27th group in the network, which brings together leaders, experts and investors from around the world. Existing UK groups are focused on areas including the North, London, Wales, Belfast, Scotland and a growing list of locations around the world.

Globally, the tech group has a membership base of more than 30,000 members.

Russ Shaw CBE, founder, Global Tech Advocates, said: “From Bristol to Warwick to Birmingham, this area is now a major player in the UK tech scene. I’m delighted to announce this as our sixth group in the UK, giving us truly national coverage across the country.”

Tech West England Advocates will seek to address the challenges raised by tech firms in the area including talent access, funding, diversity and inclusion.

An annual trade mission between Tech West England Advocates to Hong Kong and the China Greater Bay Area is currently in the works.

“Collaborating with our tech leaders, entrepreneurs and investors and connecting them to the world will give the West of England the support it needs to flourish into a globally significant tech ecosystem,” said Richard Lowe, group lead, Tech West England Advocates.

The advocate group will host a dual launch at Huboo Fulfilment in Bristol and the Birmingham Tech Week closing event.

Yiannis Maos, CEO, Birmingham Tech, said: “With our shared vision for the startup and scaleup community, it is a real pleasure to be part of the mission to connect the West Midlands and South West to the wider global tech economy.

“We want to build a digital community for all in the region, putting diversity at the heart of our mission.”

Data published today showed that the West Midlands tech sector is now valued at £15bn. Earlier this week the region revealed plans to appoint a tech commissioner.
