EV charging startup Bonnet gets backing from Deliveroo and Zapp founders

The founders of Deliveroo, Zapp and TIER have invested in London-based electric vehicle (EV) charging platform Bonnet in a $5.5m (£4m) funding round led by Lightspeed.

Bonnet provides users with real-time information on EV charging availability and options via an app. It said it will use the additional capital to triple the number of its employees, secure new charge point operator partnerships, increase international presence and support R&D into new features.

It also plans to expand coverage of UK and European chargers by the end of the year.

The startup attracted the interest and capital of Deliveroo founder Will Shu, ex-Tesla president Jon McNeill, TIER co-founder Lawrence Leuschner, along with Zapp founders Joe Falter and Navid Hadzaad.

In addition to these angel investors, venture capital firms Lightspeed, GV and 20VC also provided funding.

Co-founders Patrick Reich and Eliot Makabu launched Bonnet in 2021 with the goal of simplifying EV charging from home. In addition to charging information, it also offers users charging bundles.

“Bonnet is continuing to see rapid growth, with thousands of new charge points added each month and incredible uptake from drivers and fleets alike. This year will continue to see the advancement of our tech offering and we can’t wait to put the new features into drivers’ hands,” said Reich.

Rytis Vitkauskas, partner at Lightspeed said: “The driver experience of charging and operating EVs will evolve dramatically, we’re excited to partner with Bonnet founders Patrick and Eliot who have a unique perspective on how to bring a next generation, delightful product experience to market while augmenting the efforts of underlying infrastructure providers.”

The $5.5m funding is follows a $1.2m seed round last August.
