Amazon introduces own-brand groceries on its UK website

Disruption is happening everywhere! Retailers need to keep up with customer demands and expectations to keep their business running. Consequently, this has led to innovative solutions that no one thought possible just a few years ago.

New technologies, increased consumer choice, and fiercer competition has fuelled a sharp rise in the density of urban supermarkets.

In the latest development, Amazon has started adding own-brand groceries to its UK website to make gains in the grocery sector. The customers can add hundreds of ‘By Amazon’ and ‘Our Selection’ products into their carts in the upcoming days.

As per the report, Amazon is planning to promote the service through advertisement to attract more customers. The range spans fresh produce, ready meals, and other cupboard essentials.

Amazon Fresh

It’s worth mentioning that Amazon started offering free grocery delivery to Prime customers in Britain last summer to take on traditional grocery stores.

The Amazon Fresh store in Ealing, West London is a ‘contactless’ shop available to anyone signed up on the Amazon app on their phone. Customers need to scan in a code on their phone to enter the shop.

Shoppers can pick up their items without scanning them or even visiting a till. Sensors on the shelves detect when an item has been taken while cameras and other technology backed by AI monitor individuals’ movement.

The bill will be generated automatically to the shopper’s Amazon account when they leave the store. The store will stock about 10,000 grocery products including brands such as Heinz and Kelloggs, and items from Morrisons, Booths, and Mindful Chef, says the report.

In terms of market shares, Amazon accounts for a small proportion of the UK groceries market. It already sells groceries from Morrisons and Northern chain Booths on its website.

Reportedly Amazon has plans to open further stores.

Wei Gao left Amazon Grocery

On the other news, Wei Gao, Amazon’s vice president of grocery tech, product, and supply chain, is leaving the company after 16 years tenure at Amazon.

She also held the coveted role of ‘ghost’ advisor to Jeff Bezos while he was CEO from July 2018 to January 2020, says the report. Well, Gao is not the first to leave in recent times.

A few days back, Charlie Bell, a senior executive in the Amazon cloud business left the company, and Jeff Wilke, CEO of Amazon’s global consumer business, also resigned earlier this year. Further, other senior women executives have recently left Amazon, adds the report.

Gao’s departure comes as Amazon has come under fire for its large, white male senior ranks.
