Index Ventures announces $3B funding to support new wave of founders for 5K jobs in the UK

While the pandemic was devastating in so many ways, COVID-related restrictions created an opening for founders to reimagine the world, transcending physical boundaries. Companies and people had to adapt to the digital world seemingly overnight, challenging the established norms of the traditional work contract. The world is witnessing a fresh generation of founders, with bolder, more global ideas and endeavours and supporting this new generation of founders is Index Ventures.

The London-based VC firm has raised an investment of $3.1 billion in new funds to support the next wave of founders in the UK and across the world. It will commit $2 billion to growth-stage startups and $900 million to early-stage investments, in addition to the previously announced $2 billion seed vehicle this year.

5K jobs in the UK

The UK is the company’s single largest destination for investments in Europe. The fund comes on the wave of an extremely successful year for the VC group, being an early backer of a number of recent UK IPOs, including Deliveroo, Trustpilot and Wise. Thus, it is but obvious that a large chunk of the funding will be used directly in the UK. The company already has $1 billion currently invested in the country – with Index-backed startups creating 5000 jobs in the UK alone over the next 12 months.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak has supported the announcement of Index’s new fund. “It’s great that they’ve raised $3.1 billion in new funds to support the entrepreneurs who are shaping the future of our economy,” he said.

Seed-to-IPO journey

Talking about supporting the entrepreneurs in their seed-to-IPO journey, Mike Volpi, Partner, Index Ventures said: “We believe in partnering with founders from the beginning of their journey through their IPOs. These funds will support new ventures through all the stages of growth, from ideation to maturity. We’ll be investing in companies across sectors, particularly in consumer, enterprise, software infrastructure, gaming and fintech, where we’ve established leadership and expertise. We continue to see a lot of opportunity here, while of course we remain open to exploring other new and exciting areas.”

Supporting new wave of founders, everywhere

Regarding the investing focus for these new funds, Jan Hammer, Partner, Index Ventures said: “We’re doubling down on what I call the ‘people dimension’ — looking for authentic entrepreneurs building mission-driven businesses, playing into ever-larger or ever-expanding markets. We want to support creative founders who are building technology in a smart way to provide great products and services to the economy.”

All three of Index’s new vehicles are geographically agnostic and will be used to invest in sectors such as consumer, enterprise software, gaming and fintech, where Index has already established a successful track record.
