London-based dental startup Basma redefining oral health through teledentistry secures £2.1M

Basma, a dental startup that offers a particular variety of Telehealth called Teledentistry, has secured $3 million (approx £2.1 million) funding in Series A round.

Who backed Basma?

The investment round was led by MEVP with the participation of SOSF, IM capital, and returning investors iSME, Cedar Mundi Ventures, and IFA capital.

The London-based company plans to use the fund to hire new talent, expand infrastructure technology, and growing a network of partner dental care clinics across the GCC to reach more countries and cities.

Democratise dental care

Dr. Cherif Massoud and Hrag Hayrabedian founded Basma to democratize customers’ experience in dental care. The UK company is a direct-to-consumer healthcare brand that wants to give customers straighter and brighter teeth.

The company adopts a particular variety of Telehealth called Teledentistry. Basma’s platform connects patients to orthodontists who track the progress of treatment and schedule consultations via a digital platform.

Reason behind the remote treatment

Basma says people find remote dental treatment is the easier and more convenient way. Further, Teledentistry allows the company to democratise orthodontic care by cutting the overhead cost that customers pay at clinics.

“This puts our treatment at a price that is 65% less than metal braces or traditional in-clinic aligners,” says Basma.

How does Basma remote treatment work?

First off, Basma’s doctors individually analyse each case to determine whether it can be treated with invisible aligners. The aligners are clear dental trays that gently and discreetly move your teeth to their correct position in an average of 6 months.

Based on customer’s impressions and the photos of their teeth, the doctors will design treatment and send a custom 3D view of their new smile.

Upon approval, the customer will receive aligners. The allotted doctor will remotely follow up on the customer’s progress throughout the treatment.

How do doctors follow up works?

Every month, or at the end of every 2 steps in the treatment, the customer needs to upload a few progress pictures of their teeth to their account. Through these images, the doctors will be able to check if their treatment is going according to plan.

As per the company’s claim, each case will be assigned to and led by an experienced orthodontist who will be remotely monitoring the treatment from start to finish.

Founders comment

“As a healthcare platform taking part in the new age landscape emerging in the region, we’re on a mission to innovate, modernize, and create convenience through our service. That’s why we make all of our treatment planning in-house, take the feedback of patients, transmit it to our partner clinics, and constantly improve our offering. Pairing our fully digital nature with 3D technology and dedicated customer dental care support, we’re confident in realizing our mission and shaping an exciting future at our company,” says Basma founders.
