London VC Crane Venture backs open-source platform Gitpod in £9.4M funding round

Numerous developers globally spend thousands of hours manually managing a single development environment and waiting for builds to complete. This is not only time-consuming but also acts as a barrier for contributors. And this is where Gitpod comes into play.

The open-source platform frees engineering teams from the friction of manually setting up local dev environments, saving dozens of hours and enabling a new level of collaboration to create applications much quicker.

Raised £9.4M

Recently, Gitpod raised $13 million (approx £9.4 million) in a funding round led by General Catalyst with participation from Speedinvest, Crane Venture Partners, and Vertex Ventures.

“Gitpod is obsessed with bringing back joy and speed to the modern developer experience,” said Steve Herrod, Managing Director at General Catalyst. “Devs today are struggling with larger codebases and more complex dependencies, leading to cluttered environments that hamper productivity and collaboration. Gitpod removes that friction and is on track to establish an essential new product category in modern software development.”

This round comes six months after securing €2.5 million (approx £2.1 million) seed funding from Crane Venture Partners, Speedinvest, and Vertex Ventures US.

Launches DevXConf

On the other hand, the company also announced the launch of DevXConf, the first-ever community event exclusively focused on developer experience. The virtual event will take place April 28-29, 2021.

The funding will be used to expand its position as the leading platform for development environment automation. The German open-source platform also plans to grow the community and relevant ecosystem partnerships.

Streamlines development workflows

Founded in 2019 by experienced developer tools experts, Gitpod streamlines development workflows by helping teams become productive faster.

It works with almost any cloud provider and code-hosting platform including GitHub Enterprise GitLab, and Bitbucket.

In addition to the funding and community event, Gitpod also announced three new product features — sudo privileges, Docker support, and VS Code integration.

Notably, the entire dashboard has been redesigned, as well, to speed up developers’ workflows.

Used by 350k developers

At present, the open-source solution is used by more than 350k developers globally to automate development environments in a remote-first world.

“We write code within specific languages/frameworks, use tools, glue them together to (tool) chains, develop against APIs, and communicate and collaborate with other developers. All of that should be efficient, sustainable, and joyful,” said Sven Efftinge, CEO, Gitpod. “At DevXConf some of the brightest minds from the community get together and have a conversation on how we can make software engineering more productive and fun.”
